Saying Goodbye

After a ten day visit, my parents are back off to Florida until April. They stayed in Addy's room while visiting us and went to Sommer's house for a few days in the middle. It was so nice to have my parents here. I was a bit nervous because of how small our house is for seven people to stay comfortably and without getting on each others nerves. The kids loved having Grandma and Grandpa here to visit with too.

I was able to pick the kids up from their Dad's to have them come with to drop Grandma and Grandpa off at the airport. They both LOVE going to the airport and talked about how one day they will get to ride in an airplane. Sam isn't too happy that Seth has already been on an airplane ride. Yes, he has, but he was only 11 months old and didn't realize what was really going on. This answer helps for a short time, but she still brings it up every now and again. I just remind her how Seth has never ridden in an official Nascar going full speed around a race track like she has. She then reminds me how there are no windows for her to see out of my tummy with. I was four  months pregnant with her.

After walking them to the security gates we loaded back up and headed to Post Road where there is a "Cell Phone Lot" where people can park and watch planes take off and land. Probably named for waiting with a cell phone in hand for a phone call saying - pick me up.

We sat watching planes take off for about twenty minutes and then I point out a plane and say "There is Grandma & Grandpa's airplane." We watch that plane fly high into the sky until we are no longer able to see the plane.

With the exception of FaceTime on our iPhones, we'll see you in April.

You'll Shoot Your Eye Out

Being part of a family that hunts means you better get used to the idea that your own child will hunt too. Yes, this is only a bb gun. But I know what will come next.

When I think of Seth shooting a gun I shiver. Is he ready? Is he mature enough? Will he shoot someone? Thank goodness Nick will be by his side.

This came from his Uncle Brad as a Christmas present. Nick bought him one a year ago but he's just a little too hyper to have been allowed to use it.

This summer should be fun for him, and for all, I hope.

What's in a Name

Nick and I struggled the most with finding a girl name that we both agreed on.

Nick liked Melinda. I liked Colbie. If she was a boy we would have a Joseph William instead.

We finally agreed on Adelynn June. It seemed so right for many reasons. We wanted to name her after our grandparents so until we found Adelynn June, her middle name would have been after one of our grandma's.

Where did we come up with her name?

Delphina (Del) Schiller - Nick' Paternal Grandma
Lorraine & Grandpa Robert Adelmann - Nick's Maternal Grandparents
Geraldine June Williams - My Paternal Grandma
Linda Schiller - Nick's Mom
Terri Lynn Loken - My Mom

Her name is perfect!

We woke to the excitement of Seth and Sam hollaring that Santa came last night. I absolutely love the glow in their eyes and the smiles on their faces.

Sam got her PeeWee Pillow Pet
Seth got his train set
Addy got a Daddy who adores her

All-in-all it was a great Christmas

I can't remember the last time I spent Christmas with my whole family. In 2008 maybe? That is when my parents started spending the winter months in Florida. Since Addy was due right before Christmas, my parents decided to return to Minnesota.

It was very nice to have everyone together. Missing from pics - myself, Chris, Cale and Tom

"She sounds like a lamb"

A newborns cry is precious. It is very distinct from that of an older baby's cry. It takes a little while to distinguish what each cry means. Is it hunger, tired, tummy ache, over stimulated/bored or is it just plain - I'm not happy!

While giving Addy a bath a few days after getting home from the hospital, Seth and Sam couldn't get over the way she cries when she is not happy. "She sounds like a lamb" Seth tell us; then laughs.

It only took one bath in this basin until we decided to use our baby tub. She still didn't like it as much until her umbilical stump healed and the toasty water could be up to her chest for warmth.

Holiday Concert

Yesterday was the Holiday Concert at school. They were both very excited.

Seth is in the first row third from the right.

Every Monday from 3-3:30pm Seth stays after school to go to Elementary Choir. He has been practicing since October on the first two songs below and has been enjoying himself.

Sing of Joy by Teresa Jennings
Snowbiz Snowman by Andy Beck
It's Santa Again by Elizabeth Gilpatrick
Festival of Lights by Cheryl Lavender
We Wish You a Merry Christmas by Michael Sweeney

Sam isn't old enough to be in Elementary Choir so she only had the two songs that the First Graders sing plus the last song which all students sing as they are standing in every aisle circling those who came to watch.

Reindeer Are Tapping by Susan Nipp
The Little Snowflake by Teresa Jennings
We Wish You a Merry Christmas by Michael Sweeney

Sam is in the middle row to the left of the microphone (behind boy in red and blue striped shirt).

Family who was there to watch:
Nick, myself and Adelynn
Grandma and Grandpa Loken
Grandma and Grandpa Schiller

Going Home

The last few days I have had to recall how to be a mother to a newborn. How to soothe a crying baby. A reminder of how much attention they need and how much you just want to hold them and stare at their awe. Amazed at how in 9 months a human body can make something so beautiful and precious.

I'm ready to piece our lives together. It's one thing caring for a newborn in the hospital. It is another to take them home and figure out how life fits together gain with a new baby.

I enjoyed my stay at Woodwinds but there is no place like home. We didn't get out of the hospital in time to pick my parents up at the airport so my step-brother, Cale, picked them up and drove them to our house.

Nick wasn't quite ready to go right home from the hospital. Instead he wanted to bring Adelynn to her first store, a very special store, Saint Paul Harley Davidson. My feet were too swollen to fit into my shoes, so I wondered around Harley wearing my not so fashionable slippers. We picked Ads up a white and a pink Harley Davidson hat which she loves sporting on every outing we take. She is a proud Harley girl! We also picked Sam up a pink and black HD hoodie and Seth a black zip-up HD sweater. Since Nick got his new bike, we have definatley become a HD family. Tangent...

We left HD and headed to get the kids from school. Shortly after we got home my parents and Cale arrived.

There is no time to settle in. We have a concert to go to. I made sure the hospital staff knew that I had plans and needed to be home to attend Seth and Sam's Christmas Concert. Especially since Seth has joined the Elementary Choir and has been practicing every Monday from 3-3:30pm.

Adelynn was a hit after the concert. She met all of the kids past and present teachers, their friends and others we know throughout the community.

Adelynn's Visitors

While I was in labor my sister Sommer and two nephews Ethan and Jacob arrived at Woodwinds from Litchfield. They were the first to meet Adelynn.

Next was Seth who couldn't get enough of holding his new baby sister

and Samantha who was excited and proud to be a big sister.

Grandpa Jim and Grandma Linda holding their first Grandchild.
Linda is a little sidetracked by what Seth is doing. She took well to being called Grandma for the first time - officially.

On Sunday, Seth, Samantha, Sommer, Ethan and Jacob returned to visit some more. Sommer had graciously taken Seth and Sam back to our house for the night. Her first taste of caring for four kids at once with no other adults.
Later in the day, my Dad and Grandpa Williams stopped in on their way home from Winona. Adelynn is my Dad's second Granddaughter and fifth Grandchild.

Nick packed up and took the kids home since they have school Monday morning.

After he left, Melanie and Dan came to visit. Maddie wasn't there, but she deserves to be included in the picture.

Monday afternoon we were discharged from the hospital and were thankful for our quiet days at the hospital.

Adelynn June Schiller

After a repeat of yesterday morning, I was back up and running on Pitocin, walking the halls, rocking on the ball and watching more movies. At noon my nurse midwife, Linda Gellerman, came in to check my progress and we decided to break my water. She was on-call until 6pm and wanted to "catch" our baby. Today is the day!

As soon as she broke my water the contractions started picking up. Around 4pm I moved to the warm bathtub to help relax me. The contractions were tolerable so I would switch between the tub, bed and ball every so often. I was caught a few times walking while a contraction came, it wasn't the best feeling standing up. I would lean up against Nick or the door and breath through it. I'm sure gravity was playing a role and helped with the progression of labor.

I finally resorted to the bed, found a comfortable position on my left side and laid there with my eyes closed. The "wave" would roll in, break, and receed back to nothing. As it was almost gone, Nick would tell me "Okay, it's starting to lighten up." He stood by my side feeling lost in what to do and how to help me. "Just don't rub my hips please" is all I would say. I continued to lay there listening to "The Best of Relaxation - Pure Relaxation CD". What a difference to be able to listen to that CD and keep my mind on staying relaxed. I was getting so worn out that the peaks of each contraction were getting to be too much. I was given Fentanyl through my IV to take the edlge off. I don't think it took the edge off, instead just allowed me to rest better between each contraction.

Linda informed me that it was about 6pm and that Angela Reid would be starting in a few minutes. With that being said, I felt the urge to push. Linda had dinner plans but stayed long enough to see our baby born. Linda had told Nick that she wouldn't be the one to call out the gender of our baby; that she would leave that up to Nick. Once our baby was born it felt like an eternity before Nick shared the gender with me. I guess he had to look twice to make sure that it wasn't a boy. The Schiller generation of girls is continued...

6 hours, 7 pushes
and our baby girl was born.

Awaiting

Today is the day, or so we hoped.
I was woken at 8am to shower, eat breakfast and then have the pitocin started to get my contractions going. By 9am my primary Nurse Midwife, Katie Pehl, put me on a low dose of pitocin. We walked the halls, rocked on the large exercise ball and passed time by watching "The Blind Side", "The Break-Up" and  "The Persuit of Happyness".

Linda brought Seth and Sam up to visit after school was out. Dad and Grandpa Williams stopped by on their way down to Winona. Nick, Linda and the kids left to go grocery shopping and grab some dinner. Before I knew it, the clock said 8pm and Sarah Kromroy, CNM, was in to visit. After being on Pitocin for more than 10 hours your uterus becomes saturated and it no longer becomes effective. I was unhooked from the pitocin, monitors and my IV. I was offered a balloon device that appies pressure to both sides of the cervix which helps dialate. I was 3cm on the outside and 2cm on the inner cervix. A hour after the balloons were placed I progressed to 4cm throughout.

"Get a good nights rest!"

Admitted

Maternity Care roomIt's my last day of work. I'll be admitted to Woodwinds Hospital in Woodbury tonight to start the induction process. I was to be at the hospital by 6:30pm, but was asked to call first. Linda agreed to drive me to Woodwinds and Nick would meet me there. Just as Linda was arriving to pick me up I was asked to arrive at 7:30pm. So instead Linda gave me a ride to Nick's work (Tousley Ford in White Bear Lake).

Linda offered to bring us out to dinner. I passed on eating since I wasn't allowed to with Seth and Sam. Nick and Linda stopped for some Chipotle and I tried to focus my attention elsewhere or I would have snatched Nick's meal from him. When we arrive at Woodwinds the nurse asked if I had a good dinner. Hah oops!

We settled in and waited for Kathy Bruce, the Certified Nurse Midwife on call to place my cervadil. I was offered Demerol and a sedative to help me sleep but I passed. We hope to meet our baby tomorrow.

Accupuncture

I never thought I'd ever find a reason to willingly let a stranger flick needles into my skin for "therapeutic" reasons. My midwife recommended that I go try this a couple times to see if it will help start labor. Often times it does within 24 hours.

There are certain "forbidden" pressure points on a woman's body that shouldn't be messed with during pregnancy. The webbing between the thumb and pointer finger and an inch above the ankle bone, just to name few. It is believed that applying pressure to those areas can bring on contractions. I was skeptical.

I arrived, removed my socks and shoes and awaited my first needle insertion. It was painless! I can do this, I tell myself. A few more painless needles were inserted and then I felt one hit a nerve. That one was uncomfortable. She placed a few on the top of  my feet, my ankes, sides of my calves, both webs by my thumbs, clavicals, and my ear. The ear was to relax my body and numb any pain. She'd flick or twist each needle then let my lay in the dim room listening to relaxing music. Then she would return to flick and twist some more. This was repeated over 45 minutes, then it was off to work. I wasn't even half way to work when the contractions started. Facinating! My skeptacism began to fade.

The contractions continued through the night and became closer together. Nick was getting excited... I finally decided I needed to go to sleep. If I was truly going into labor, I'd wake up, which I did thanks to my alarm clock. Not labor.

I repeated the accupuncture three times total. It didn't work for me. Just provided me hopeful contractions that would always fade away while I was sleeping at night.

Decorating Our Tree

Decorating our tree was done in bits and pieces this year since we got home so late from cutting it down. Some of the Christmas decorations were put out, but not like all the other years. Being five days overdue took away from my ambition. Plus I knew what I put out now, I'd only have to put back away in just a couple weeks.

Look how tall my baby boy is!

Like a Sister

Today is my Best Friend, Melanie Janke at some point to be Rudiger's 33rd Birthday. I met Melanie while at Burnsville Senior High School in 1995. There are only two friends from school that I have kept in touch with - Melanie and Keri Williams.

Melanie and I been through a lot of the same things in life, and she has always been there for me. Near or Far.

A number of those years we would speak a couple times a month, but see each other less than that. Now that Melanie is spending more time in the cities I get to see her more often.

I'm ever so grateful to have met her that day in the lunchroom.

I love her like a sister.

Being a Wiseman

Each year Saint Mark's Church has their church school kids put on a Christmas play. Second grade is when the kids start having lines in the play rather than just singing songs. Seth was chosen to be one of the three wiseman. It was my job to coach the wiseman on when they go up to the stage and where they stand. It was pretty easy, which I sure was because it was questionable if I would still be teaching classes this late into the month.

Seth was very excited to have this role. His Grandma Brunner, Dad, Aunt Jeanie and Cousin Jaidan were all there. Nick sat in the front row to take pictures. Unfortunately, Nick didn't have much practice with the new camera so most of the pictures didn't turn out too well.

Mason Lorenzen and Derek Foss were the other two wiseman.

Sam sang "Away in the Manger". All that practice paid off. It was the best she has done in singing along.

Due Date

December 8, 2011 marks 40 weeks of my pregnancy.

Will baby come today?

Not likely

Seth and Sam were both 16 days overdue which if this baby follows the same schedule, (s)he will be here around the 24th of December. Well, if this was any other 24th besides December, I'd be okay to wait. But seeing that this 24th is Christmas Eve, I'd rather be at home with my children than being hospital bound. If baby doesn't come by the 15th, I'm opting for an induction.

I've been working at the Eagan Clinic this week and have been walking the halls non-stop, drinking my Red Raspberry Leaf Tea and taking my Evening Primrose Oil. All in an effort to help have this baby close to the due date. We'll see if it works.

Fight!! Fight!!

More fun pictures with our new camera. Nick ran into Cub Food in Northfield as the kids and I waited for him. Rather than having the kids sit in the truck being crazy, I sent them outside to play on the snowpile left by the plows.

You can see how the two of them play. Sam makes sure Seth is watching, while Seth takes advantage of Sam having her back to him.

The feeling  you get watching your kids play, laugh and grow is a wonderful thing. They had so much fun running up and down this pile dodging snow balls/boulders.

I have to soak up these moments!

Cutting Our Tree

Since I can remember my family has always cut down our own Christmas Tree. It was always fun running around looking for trees and playing in the snow. Since I've become the parent, it still remains something that I will forever do with my family, yet drives me crazy because you focus your attention on the flaws of each tree instead of what you can do to make it shine. I've compromised in the past with having an artificial tree every other year, but it isn't the same. Those days are gone. Cutting down a trees allows your family to create memories that will last a lifetime and the smell of a real tree fills the house.

As of this moment, I am due in four days. Buying a pre-cut tree would be easier, but I would be in turn taking away those memories from my children. Off we go tree hunting! I made a huge effort to not be so critical about the trees I am looking at. The kids run to trees that look like Charlie Brown trees or are mammoth sized, lopsided, or just plain old sad. It never takes long before they become distracted and just wanna run in the snow.

I was having a lot of fun playing with our new SLR camera.

I'm quite impressed with the amazing difference between our old camera and this one. It definately makes taking pictures a lot more fun.

The last two years of tree hunting at Hampton Hills Tree Farm have been later than my family tradition started off. We have always gone the weekend following Thanksgiving. Well, since Dave's weekend always lands following Thansgiving we usually have to push it off until the first week in December. You can tell that a lot of trees have been cut down in the week time from when the farm opens. It has also snowed the past two years which makes Nick's job not as fun, for him at least. The kids and I always find enjoyment in watching him clear the trees for examination.

"Here Nick, come shake this one. hmmm.... how about this one..." I had him shake a couple extra just so I can play with the different types of camera settings. He is such a good sport about it too.

We finally came upon a tree that looked somewhat decent. That and I also came to realize that no tree is perfect. We can make it shine once it gets home. Let's take this one...

Seth did the honor of cutting the tree down and since I am carrying our newest member of the family I was excempt from having to awkwardly carry the tree.

We took the tree to the other end of the farm to have it shaken, tied to the roof and pay. Next stop is five miles down the road to our home.

The kids and I always make a game out of this time a year. From Coates south we guess how many vehicles we will see on our way home with Christmas Trees on them. We can easily reach 50 or more vehicles within a fifteen minute drive if we're playing on the right weekend.

Once we get home, we'll trim the trunk and put it in the stand. Once it warms up, it will be time to decorate the tree and create more memories.

Next year well have another little helper who will tumble on the snow when not being pulled in a sled.
